Car Battery Sizes Explained: Ah, CCA, DIN vs JIS Codes Like 55D23L

How to read a car battery label: what JIS codes like 55D23L and 80D26L mean, how DIN sizes work, what Ah and CCA tell you, and the sizes common UAE cars usually take.

Quick answer

Japanese and Korean cars mostly use JIS sizes, written like 55D23L: a performance rank (55), a case width and height group (D), the length in centimetres (23) and the terminal layout (L or R). European cars mostly use DIN or EN sizes, usually described by capacity in amp hours (Ah), such as a 74 Ah battery. Ah is how much energy the battery stores; CCA (cold cranking amps) is how hard it can push to start the engine. Match the size, terminal layout and type first, then the power figures.

How JIS codes work

Take 55D23L, one of the most common sizes on UAE roads:

PartExampleWhat it means
Performance rank55A combined rating of capacity and starting power. Higher means more powerful, within the same case size.
Width and height groupDThe case's width and height. A, B, C and D are progressively larger cross-sections.
Length23The case length in centimetres, roughly.
Terminal layoutLWhich side the terminals sit on. L and R are mirror images and are not interchangeable.

So 80D26L is the same width and height as 55D23L, about 3 cm longer and more powerful. 105D31L is longer again, used on big SUVs like the Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser. Some batteries add an S after the number (for example 55B24LS), which means thinner, small terminals.

How DIN and EN sizes work

European batteries follow DIN or EN case sizes. In UAE shops they are often called by capacity, such as DIN 55, DIN 66, DIN 74 or DIN 100, where the number is roughly the Ah rating. On the label you may also see a longer European part number. Its first three digits usually give the capacity: a number starting 574, for example, is a 74 Ah battery, while a first digit of 6 means 100 Ah or more.

Varta and Bosch also use their own short codes, such as Varta E11 (74 Ah) or G14 AGM (95 Ah). They describe the same thing: case size plus performance.

What Ah and CCA mean

  • Ah (amp hours) is the battery's capacity: how much energy it can store. More Ah keeps electronics running longer with the engine off.
  • CCA (cold cranking amps) is the current the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at −18°C while holding a usable voltage. It is the starting-power figure.

The UAE never gets close to −18°C, but CCA still matters: a battery that has lost much of its rated CCA through heat damage is a battery about to fail. That is what a battery tester measures.

Is a higher Ah always better?

No. A slightly higher Ah in the same case size and type is fine and can help a car with lots of accessories. But a physically bigger battery may not fit the tray or hold-down, a different case can put the terminals out of reach, and on cars that register the battery, the car needs to know its capacity. Stick close to the original specification.

Terminal layout: L vs R

Positive and negative must end up on the same sides as on the old battery, because the cables are cut to length. A battery with the opposite layout simply won't connect, or will stretch the cables dangerously. Always compare the new battery with the old one, not just the code.

Sizes common UAE cars usually take

These are typical fitments. Sizes change between model years, engines and trims, so always check the label on your battery, or send us a photo.

CarTypical size
Toyota CorollaB24 size, such as 46B24L, on most petrol models
Toyota CamryD23 size, such as 55D23L, on many petrol models; hybrids differ
Nissan SunnySmall JIS size in the B19 to B24 range
Nissan PatrolLarge D31 size, such as 105D31L, or DIN 90 to 100 Ah
Toyota Land CruiserLarge D31 size, such as 105D31L; some diesels use two batteries
Hyundai TucsonDIN size of about 60 to 74 Ah; AGM on some start-stop trims
Mercedes-Benz C-ClassDIN AGM battery of about 70 to 95 Ah, depending on year and engine

Finding the right size for your car

  1. Read the label on the battery that is fitted now.
  2. Check the owner's manual, which lists the specification.
  3. Send us your make, model and year, or a photo of the label. We confirm the exact size and type before we bring a battery.

Prices by size for popular brands are on our Amaron and Varta pages. New to the terms? Our battery glossary explains CCA, Ah, AGM and EFB.

Frequently asked questions

What does 55D23L mean on a car battery?

55 is the performance rank, D is the case width and height group, 23 is the length in centimetres, and L is the terminal layout. It is a JIS size used on many Japanese cars such as the Toyota Camry.

What size battery does a Nissan Patrol take?

Most take a large D31-size battery such as 105D31L, or a DIN battery of about 90 to 100 Ah, depending on generation and engine. Check your label or send us a photo.

Can I use a 70 Ah battery instead of 60 Ah?

Usually yes, if it is the same case size, terminal layout and type, because a slightly higher capacity does no harm. On cars that register the battery, the new capacity must be entered when it is registered.
