AGM vs EFB vs conventional: the difference
A start-stop car restarts its engine many times on every trip and keeps the electronics running while the engine is off. A conventional battery isn't built for that much cycling. EFB and AGM batteries are.
| Conventional (flooded) | EFB | AGM | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Liquid electrolyte; built for short bursts of starting power | Enhanced flooded battery; improved design for more frequent cycling | Absorbent glass mat holds the electrolyte; sealed, no topping up |
| Made for | Cars without start-stop | Simpler start-stop systems, or cars with heavy use and lots of equipment | Start-stop with brake energy recovery, and cars with high electrical demand |
| Can be replaced with | Conventional, EFB or AGM of the right size | EFB, or upgraded to AGM | AGM only |
| Typical fitted price with us | From AED 175 | AED 400 – AED 1,300 for start-stop batteries | AED 400 – AED 1,300; more for large luxury models |

Why the right type matters more in Dubai
Varta tested start-stop fleets in Dubai. Cars fitted with conventional batteries all failed within five to six months. The AGM-equipped cars ran the full twelve months and kept more than 75% of their capacity, even though battery temperatures stayed above 60°C for most of the time the cars were running.
That test combined heat with the constant cycling of start-stop, which is exactly how these cars are used in Dubai traffic. The lesson is simple: a cheaper conventional battery in a start-stop car is a false economy.
Signs your start-stop battery is weak
- The engine stops switching off at lights. Most cars disable start-stop when the battery is low.
- A start-stop or battery warning message on the dashboard
- Slow cranking, especially first thing in the morning
- Electrical glitches such as the screen restarting
A battery test confirms it before you spend anything.
Registration after replacement
Many start-stop cars monitor the battery with a sensor and adjust charging to its age. Some makes, including BMW, Mini, Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda, Seat, Land Rover, Jaguar and Jeep, expect the new battery to be registered with a diagnostic tool. Without it, start-stop can be restricted and the new battery may be charged as if it were the old one. Others, such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Honda, generally adapt on their own.
Mention your model when you book and we will confirm what your car needs before any work starts.
AGM and EFB questions
Can I replace an AGM battery with an EFB or normal battery?
No. Varta, which makes both, states that only an AGM battery may replace an AGM battery. A lower type causes start-stop faults, lost comfort functions and a much shorter battery life.
Can I upgrade from EFB to AGM?
Yes. An EFB battery can be replaced with another EFB or upgraded to AGM, provided the size and terminal layout match.
How do I know if my car has an AGM or EFB battery?
Look at the label on the battery: it usually says AGM or EFB. A start-stop button or auto start-stop in the owner's manual is another clue. If you're not sure, send us a photo of the battery label.
How much does an AGM battery cost in Dubai?
AGM and start-stop batteries typically cost AED 400 – AED 1,300 fitted with us, depending on size and brand. Large luxury models can cost more. You get the full fitted price before any work starts.
Are AGM batteries bad in hot weather?
Varta calls AGM heat sensitivity a myth. In its Dubai fleet test, start-stop cars running AGM batteries were still going after 12 months, while identical cars on conventional batteries failed within five to six months. Because AGM batteries are sealed, carmakers can also mount them away from engine heat.
