If the car has stopped and the gauge reads empty, running out is the likely cause. Avoid cranking the engine over and over.
Stopped on a main road
Move to the hard shoulder if it is safe, switch on your hazard lights and wait away from traffic, behind the barrier if there is one.
Engine cut out while driving
Sputtering then cutting out often means an empty tank, but it can also be a fuel pump or electrical fault. If fuel does not solve it, we say so.
